The Window Isn’t Closed Yet — But It’s Narrow
If you’re a senior in New York City and thought you missed your chance to change Medicare Advantage plans after January 1, take a breath. You may still have options — but the clock is ticking. Every year, thousands of seniors stay stuck in plans that don’t work for them, just because they didn’t know about the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (OEP).

What Is the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period?
Between January 1 and March 31, individuals already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage (Part C) plan can make a one-time switch. You can move to another Advantage plan or return to Original Medicare and add a Part D drug plan.
However, you can’t enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan for the first time if you’re only on Original Medicare — that option only comes during the Annual Enrollment Period (Oct 15 – Dec 7). Source: Medicare.gov
Why NYC Seniors Are Still Switching in February and March
It happens every year. A client picks a plan thinking their doctors or medications are covered — only to find out in January that something crucial is missing. A primary care doctor may be out-of-network, or a needed specialist may require prior authorization. Co-pays for medications might be higher than expected, or they may not get a benefit they thought was included — like vision or dental.
In neighborhoods like Jackson Heights, Flushing, or the Bronx, where healthcare access can vary block by block, these details matter. Many seniors don’t realize they can still make a change — and that’s where SecureSafer steps in.

Who’s Eligible to Switch Plans?
You may qualify to switch plans during OEP if:
- You’re already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan
- It’s between January 1 and March 31
- You haven’t already used your one-time switch this year
Some seniors also qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP), which allows plan changes due to life events — such as moving, losing Medicaid or Extra Help, or if a 5-Star plan becomes available in your area. Learn more about SEP guidelines here.
What Happens If You Don’t Switch?
If your current plan doesn’t cover your doctors or prescriptions, or if the benefits don’t match your lifestyle, staying in that plan could result in unnecessary costs or care delays. Unfortunately, after March 31, most people must wait until the fall to make a change — unless they qualify for a SEP.

Real NYC Story: Mr. Rahman from Woodside
Mr. Rahman signed up for a plan in December assuming his cardiologist was covered. He found out in January that wasn’t the case — and he was worried he’d have to wait a full year. We helped him switch by early March to a plan that not only included his specialist but added vision and dental, too.
Now he tells every senior in his mosque: “Don’t wait — call someone who knows these plans inside and out.”
